CAMPANULA BLOSSOMSCampanula By C.L. Fornari

Latin name:
Campanula poscharskyana

Common name: Serbian bellflower

Size: 12" high when in bloom, foliage 6" high; 10" wide

Favored growing conditions: Full or part sun; likes good drainage, fairly drought tolerant

Flower color: Purple-blue in early summer

Hardiness:  Cold hardy to Zone 3  -  Heat tolerant to Zone 8 in the south, and 10 in the west.

CAMPANULAPros:  Little to no maintenance is required for this plant.  The foliage is fresh and  bright green throughout the entire season, and looks great at the front of later blooming perennials.  Serbian bellflower's foliage takes on a reddish tint in cold weather, and is almost evergreen in zones 7 and 8.  Easy to deadhead by grabbing stems of spent flowers and giving a pull.  This plant intermingles well with other, slightly taller perennials.

Cons: This Campanula will self-seed if not deadheaded, and the flower stems are somewhat floppy and weak.  If you grow it on the edge of gardens, in a rock garden this is not a problem.  Fairly short bloom time - two to three weeks in most areas.

CAMPANULA IN THE GARDENComments:   I love this plant because it only requires a quick dead-heading, and no other attention all season.  The clean, fresh foliage is an asset in the perennial bed or around shrubs, and the leaves look good for months and months.  It would be a good plant to use in containers for this reason.

Suggested companion plants: Plant in front of Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro' (or any other daylilies) Stokesia, Heuchera 'Purple Petticoats", or any purple-leaf or variegated plant.
