HEPTACODIUMHeptacodium By C.L. Fornari

Latin name:
Heptacodium miconioides

Common name: Seven Son Flower

Size: 20' high (perhaps more), 10' - 15' wide

Favored growing conditions: Full or part sun, well drained but moist soil.  Most average garden soils are fine, although this small tree is not especially drought tolerant.  Acidic to neutral soil.

Flower color: White flowers (mildly fragrant) in late summer.

Hardiness:  Zone 5 to 8  best in part shade in very hot climates.

Pros: This multi-stemmed tree is perfect for small properties, or as a focal point in the yard or behind a perennial border.  The exfoliating bark is interesting in the winter, and the vase-like shape is graceful.  The flowers are small, but because they are in clusters they show nicely; because the calyx is pink the plant still looks like it is in bloom after the flowers fall.

Cons:  Tip die-back if temperatures dip below -24  F.  Needs watering during a drought.

Comments: I wish the pictures I have of this plant were better.  I love this plant not because of any one, showy attribute, but because of the sum total of its virtues: small size, late bloom, interesting bark, and bright green leaves.  As far as I know it is pest and disease free.
