MINI IMPATIENSMini Impatiens By C.L. Fornari

Latin name: Impatiens

Common name: Mini-Impatiens, or 'Firefly Series' Impatiens

Size: 12 to 18 inches high and 18 to 20 inches wide

Favored growing conditions: Part sun, filtered sun, or shade. Grow in rich but well drained soil - water when dry but do not keep soil swampy.

Flower color: Available in red, white, lavender and shades of pink.

Hardiness: annual in cold-weather climates

Pros: These small impatiens are perfect for containers and window-boxes. They are as free-flowering as the well known Impatiens walleriana, but the overall shape is more distinctive, almost branched like a small tree.

Cons: More expensive because they are sold in small pots, not in flats of six small plants.

Comments: Plant a few of the mini-impatiens in colorful pots and grow on a porch or deck in early summer. Later in the season, these pots can be placed around the garden to fill holes in perennial beds or provide color in shady areas.

Suggested companion plants: Effective in mixed containers with ferns, variegated spider plants, and purple or pink-leafed rex-begonias. In the garden, use with other small-scale shade lovers such as annual wax begonias, perennial purple leaf Ajuga, and the yellow-foliage Hakonechola grass.
