Solidago By
C.L. Fornari
Latin name: Solidago 'Gold Spangles’ Common name: Variegated goldenrod Size: 3’ tall – 2’ wide after three years Favored growing conditions: Grow in full sun – tolerates a wide range of soil types. Flower color: Yellow flowers appear above the green and yellow foliage in late summer. Hardiness: Zones 4 to ?? Pros: Green and gold foliage add color and interest to the garden through the summer, ending in fall bloom. I have had a couple self-sown seedlings appear, looking just like the parent plant. A good plant for the mixed perennial border, planted singly or in small groups. Cons: I can’t think of any. No, goldenrod does NOT cause hay-fever… it just happens to be in showy bloom when the ragweed (which looks like a green nothing of a plant) is in blossom. Comments: Goldenrods are beautiful and drought tolerant – why haven’t you planted them in your perennial garden yet? Suggested companion plants: early blooming perennials, and those with dark foliage such as Eupatorium ‘Chocolate’ and Heuchera ‘Stormy Seas’ |
