Magic Carpet Spirea By C.L. Fornari Latin name: Spirea x bumalda 'Magic Carpet' Common name: Magic Carpet Spirea Size: 15 - 20' high, 24" wide Favored growing conditions: Full to part sun, drought tolerant
Flower color: Pink Hardiness: Zone 3 - 8 Pros: The bright foliage adds color even when not in bloom; it is touched with red/gold in the spring and fall, and the leaves are yellow/green the rest of the summer. Stays compact enough for use in the perennial garden, foundation planting, or in front of larger shrubs. Magic Carpet blooms in early summer and if deadheaded promptly, it will produce a few more flowers in late summer.
Cons: None, really, when placed in the right location. Comments: To maintain bushiness, shear back by about a quarter
in early spring, and remove deadwood. Like all Spireas, this is a tough plant that can withstand wind and fairly poor soil. The
bright foliage combines well with dark green evergreen shrubs,
and any plant with purple foliage.
