Homemade Rabbit Repellent

May 6, 2018 | Gardens

This is a repellent to spray on plants to keep rabbits from eating them. It is only for ornamental plants, not for edibles. (Do not use this on your vegetables or fruits.)  Rabbits are herbivores – they are vegans. They don’t eat animal products. Therefore a repellent made of egg, milk or blood keeps them away.

1 cup milk, one beaten egg, mixed into 1/2 gallon water.  Strain through a dish towel or other cloth so that the egg solids don’t clog the sprayer.

To be successful with this spray be sure to do the following:

  1. Mix up spray and use it all up at once, cleaning your sprayer after it’s emptied.
  2. Spray plants Thumper has shown a liking for early in the season. Spray newly planted annuals, perennials etc immediately after planting.
  3. In the spring and early summer, spray plants every two weeks because they are continuing to grow…you want all the foliage covered. Repeat the spray after a heavy rain.
  4. It’s also a good idea to plant things that the bunnies like in other locations away from your garden. I have white clover in my lawns and that keeps Thumper and Company happy…the bunnies can frequently seen eating clover and leaving my plants alone.

    Hello CL,

Could you tell me the product that you mix with this to keep it on the leaves. You mentioned it on your radio program.
    Thank you,

Turbo spreader-sticker. You don’t really have to use it for this rabbit repellant however as the egg does a pretty good job of keeping it on foliage. But other things you might spray, such as a fungicide or spinosad, you’ll want to use Turbo.
