Witch hazel Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Arnold Promise’ – What’s Not To Love?

Feb 16, 2019 | Love This!

Name: Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Arnold Promise’ aka Arnold Promise Witch hazel

Type of Plant: Large shrub or even a small, multi-stemmed tree that’s perfect for full sun to part sun, and wonderful when placed where it can be seen in February and March.

Why I Love/Hate this plant: Flowers in the winter! What’s not to love about that? Easy to grow, fragrant flowers and color in February and March.

A Word to the Wise: Place this shrub where it can grow tall and wide, so you don’t have to try and “control it.” Many Arnold Promise witch hazels are grafted onto native Hamamelis root stalks so be on the lookout for “over-achiever” stems that shoot straight up from the trunk below the graft. Cut these off as they appear.

This shrub is perfect to include in a mixed shrub border where it can grow as tall and wide as it is genetically programed to do. Plant it where it can grow naturally and you won’t be tempted to “keep it under control.” You’ll love seeing these bright yellow flowers against the background of snow!

The witch hazel flowers are fragrant so if you’re lucky enough to have a hot tub outside for winter use, place this shrub nearby.

Most larger garden centers routinely have this plant, Brian. So call your local nursery first. If your nursery sells Monrovia plants and they don’t have the Witch hazel in stock, you can order it through the “Shop Monrovia” program and it will be delivered to your nursery. If you want to mail order, White Flower Farm is caring this plant.
